History of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®
Columbus History
After many years of working and running businesses in the retail industry, Gail Kelley and her husband, John, began looking for a change. After reading about TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® in the newspaper, they began to look into franchise opportunities. Gail and John then decided to visit TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® founder Mary Ellen Sheets and attend the company’s annual meeting. When they finally made the jump to officially leave retail, Gail and John made a pact: whoever got a job in Columbus first, the other would start TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Columbus. John found a job first in his hometown, which left the start-up moving business to Gail.
Gail’s passion is to offer the highest quality moving services possible, and as a result, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Columbus has grown to include 26 trucks and 80 movers.
Corporate History
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® started in the early 1980s as a way for two brothers to make extra money while in high school. Nearly 20 years later, the company has grown to more than 200 locations worldwide.
Brothers Jon and Brig Sorber started moving people using an old pickup truck while their mom, Mary Ellen Sheets, developed a logo to advertise in a weekly newspaper. This same stick-men logo is used today on every truck, sign and advertisement.
When the brothers left for college, Sheets continued to field calls for moving services while working another full-time job. She finally made things official in 1985 by purchasing a 14-foot truck for $350 and hiring a couple of movers. That $350 is the only capital Sheets has ever invested in the company.
Eventually, Sheets decided to franchise the company, and in 1989, she awarded the first location outside of Michigan to her daughter, Melanie Bergeron, in Atlanta, Ga.
Brig and Jon Sorber eventually returned to team up with their mom and older sister in the mid-1990s. Brig Sorber now serves as the president and chief executive officer, and Jon Sorber is executive vice president.
Today, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is the nation's largest franchised local moving company, and it boasts a fleet of more than 1,200 trucks. The company has come a long way – and logged a lot of miles – since Sheets sketched the first "stick-men." The TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system continues to pave the way for future growth and innovation in home and business moving, while maintaining a commitment to exceeding customers' expectations.
